It's always seemed to me that life aboard a submarine is a very delicate one. First off a sub is a boat, that has to deal with all the perils of being out at sea of any boat. But then they have their own special set of risks that are specific to them. First off they are designed to go under water, but not too far under water or the pressure will crush them like an aluminum can. Then add in the fact that some of them are nuclear powered and some of them carry nuclear weapons. If all of that weren't enough, many of them are used by the military and are subject to enemy attack. Currently they are probably safer than most other times in history with newer technology and a lack of major naval battles, but back in WWII a lot of people died aboard submarines and they knew this when they signed up. To me that makes them amazing folks in my book. My total experience on a sub consists of one ride at Disneyland when I was a kid, so I have relied on the many submarine movies to give me a little insight into what life aboard a submarine was and is like for those who choose that career.
